The Company

A major metal finishing company in Ohio has a joint venture between a United States Steel company and a Canada-based holding company with 40 companies that provide electroplating, machining of high-tolerance parts and assemblies and development of new finishes for steel work rolls that are used in steel and aluminum rolling mills. This major metal finishing company has seven locations in the United States. Its 50,000 square-foot plant in Ohio, employs about 50 people. Operations involve grinding, machining and plating metal in the refurbishment of process rollers, which provide superior finishes on sheets of steel and aluminum.

The Challenge

Like many metal finishing operations, the plant flows a cooling bathmostly waterover the cutting elements during the machining of steel rollers. Large amounts of metal shavings called grinding fines end up in solution as the coolant washes over the cutting surface; these fines must be removed in order to reclaim and reuse the fluid. Spent coolant is channeled from several work areas into a 250-to-300-gallon catch sump, from which the company had been using diaphragm pumps to move the coolant to a filter for reclamation of the fluid.

The Shredder (SK) pumps leave solids slightly larger than if passed through a grinder pump. The shredding action is caused by using a cutting impeller with a Tungsten Carbide Tip, against a "spiral" shaped diffuser plate. Also available in Stainless.

FEATURES:

Longer Power Cord – Standard 33ft. power.
304SS Motor Housing – Superior abrasion resistance will not wear out like aluminum motor housings when pumping sandy water.
Three Seal Motor Protection - Motor is protected by double mechanical seals. Lower seal made of silicon carbide/silicon carbide and upper seal is made of carbon/ceramic. An additional lip seal has been installed above the impeller, to help prevent abrasives such as dirt, silt or sand, from entering into the seal chamber.
More Motor Protection – Winding protection and (NEMA) Class F motor insulation allows motor temperature to raise to 230°F, superior to pumps with Class A and B insulation. Automatic switch turns pump motor off if temperature and/or amp draw raises too high. When the motor cools the switch will automatically reset and the pump will turn back on.
Tough Pump Construction – Hardened cast iron stands up to rough handling and pumping sandy water unlike pumps with soft resin impellers or plastic exterior components.

New Almatec White Paper Identifies Features of Solid-Body Plastic Pumps

The demands that oscillating-displacement pumps put on their materials of construction are extremely strict due to the constantly alternating stress to which these types of pumps are subjected. Through the years, the debate has raged: Is metal or plastic the best type of material to use in the construction of these pumps? For a long time, metal was the No. 1 choice, but recent advancements in solid-body plastic pump manufacture and operation have put them at the head of the class when it comes to oscillating applications.

These advantages are spelled out in a new white paper from Almatec®, Kamp-Linfort, Germany. Titled "A Solid Solution to Pump Selection," the white paper shows how only a pump with a solid plastic body can offer the operational characteristics that can maximize production and pump reliability in oscillating applications. Namely, only an oscillating pump with a solid-plastic body can guarantee the necessary weight for maximized operation, while the pump components can be crafted so that desired wall thicknesses are arranged where they are needed. WASHINGTON D.C., June 8, 2009 -- Werner Process has been selected for the 2009 Best of Cincinnati Award in the Pumps & Pumping Equipment category by the U.S. Commerce Association (USCA).
The USCA "Best of Local Business" Award Program recognizes outstanding local businesses throughout the country. Each year, the USCA identifies companies that they believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category.
